Gay Raccoon Art by Glendon Hyde
Artist. Visionary. Revolutionary.
The work of Pittsburgh-based artist Gay Raccoon Art, seeks to give voice to the broken and discarded. As a youth they experienced oppression and removal from the family home, at age 16, because of their queer identity. This didn’t break his beliefs in himself, and through acceptance in the queer community as a drag queen (Anna Conda), a political advocate, and community organizer, their understanding of worth was changed. Rejection peaked an interest on assignation of worth, changing the expression to be dominated to be by donated material from the community, refuse, and found object. This desire to find worth in the supposedly worthless drove their artistic expression. Upon joining the Fiber Arts Guild of Pittsburgh crocheting has become the stabilizing force in these expressions. B
